Application Components. The application is brief, and preliminary data are not required. See Detailed Instructions.

• One-page Application Cover Sheet
• Abstract (250 words or less)
• NIH Biographical Sketch for the P.I. and any Co-Investigator(s)
• Narrative (limit 7 pages)
• Co-Investigator Letter(s)
• (A budget is not required)

Annual Deadline. Applications will be accepted once annually with funding to commence on July 1. The Program office will annually announce the deadline to apply and the application requirements. Applications must be received at the Program office no later than 5:00 PM, Pacific Standard Time on the deadline date in order to be considered. The next deadline is February 8, 2012. This deadline applies to the paper copies and the electronic submission.

Review Criteria. All applications are reviewed by members of the Scientific Review Board. The major criteria used to evaluate applications are:

• Innovation: cutting-edge research, new-to-the-field thinking
• Relevance to asthma: potential for new insights into causes and treatments
• Research proposal: importance and clarity
• Investigator: productivity and ingenuity

Notification. Applicants will be notified by email of the outcome of the review process by May 31, 2012. Notification will be sent to the Principal Investigator's email address provided on the Application Cover Sheet. The AAF does not provide critiques of unfunded proposals.

Start Date. 2012 Awards will be activated July 1, 2012.
